Paper 1: Composition and Situational Writing

Part 1: Composition. (30 marks) Write about 250 - 350 words. You will be given 5 different topics. Choose one. The topics are text types you have learnt before, for example, narratives, expositions, descriptive writing etc.

Remember: To score for this part, you need a 'clean' essay - watch your grammar! Use the suitable words. Don't keep using common words like 'nice', 'good', 'said' etc. Use 'exemplary', 'pleasant' or 'retorted' if possible.

Part 2: Situational Writing.Write about 200 words. (30 marks) It is a factual recount, so it can be anything from writing a report about an accident you witnessed, an event in your school etc. Examples are: police reports, witness accounts etc.

Remember: Task fulfillment is important. You MUST include all the points the question asks you to include.

Paper 2: Comprehension. (50 marks)

Comprehension, plus summary.

Remember: When completing the vocabulary questions, do take note of the tenses. Keep to the original tense of the word which you are tested on. Also, when a question asks you to USE YOUR OWN WORDS, follow instructions. You will not get the mark if the answer is not in your own words.

Poetry Anthology Requirements

Secondary 2 Express English Term 3 - Poetry

Task: Put together an Anthology of poetry.

Print out on recycled paper.

Requirements:
1) Work in groups of 4 - 5
2) Print on A4 paper but print 2 pages on one paper (A5 size).
3) Use MS Word
4) Align left, font size 12 at least, must be in a readable font
5) Must include title of poem, and poet’s name two lines after the last line of the poem.
6) Must have cover page, contents page, and citation page.
- Group members’ names must appear on the contents page, at the bottom right hand corner.
- Citation page should have 1. Name of poet 2. Title of poem in quotation marks 3. Website poem was taken from 4. Date website was accessed.
- Eg.
Jane Yolen. “Earth Day”. http://www.tooter4kids.com/classroom/earth_day_poems.htm. 22nd June 2008.
7) Pages must be numbered
8) The anthology must be made up of at least 8 poems
- 1 must be written by the group
- 2 can be taken from the set I give you
- Each poem must be at least 10 lines long
- Each poem must be about 50 words long, no less, but can be more
- No vulgarities in poem.
- Poem written by group can have the subjects of
i) Earth dying
ii) How people waste resources
iii) What people can do to save the earth

9) How to search for poems: Go to http://www.google.com.sg . Search for ‘poems about saving the earth’. Or access: http://www.saveourearth.co.uk/soe_article.php. Click on ‘Poetry’ in the leftmost column.

To Print:
1) Click on File -> Click Print
2) Under the Zoom area (bottom right hand corner), edit the Pages Per Sheet option: click on 2 pages
3) Click OK.

1) Arrive at least 15 min before the exam.

2) No handphones allowed. Surrender your handphones to the teacher in charge. Do not attempt to hide the handphones. If found out, you might be barred from the examination. Your handphones will be returned to you when you are done with the exam.

3) Must produce MC if you cannot make it for the exam. Otherwise, no make up session will be given.

4) Wear full school uniform. The teacher has the right to stop you from taking the examination if you do not wear proper uniform.

The English Mid Year Examinations' Paper 1 consists of the following sections:

Oct .17 Entry #4 An Inside Look at the Cafeteria Workers

Volunteering with the Food Recycling Program is such a rewarding experience. Throughout the week, I really look forward to Wednesday, a time that I can take a break from my daily activities to help others. The simple routine of what I do brings such an exciting and joyful feeling to my heart. I have never seen so much food in my life! Today I think we counted 36 buckets. WOW! This is great! Do you know how many mouths this is going to feed? I am so glad that Glenn Hutchinson started the Food Recycling Program, because it helps so many homeless and starving people.

Through the food recycling program, I not only learn about helping others, but I also learn about other people and their feelings., e.g., the cafeteria workers. Many people perceive cafeteria workers by their outside appearance, but once you get to know them, you see what’s on the inside. There is one lady that works in the cafeteria that is so sweet and caring. As my friend and I are doing our "daily duties", she is talking to us about her grandchildren and asks us how we are doing. Then there is the energetic lady that always makes me laugh. She always does crazy things to put a smile on my face. Today, I went to the back room to bring the workers the dirty dishes, and the energetic lady had the radio on and was dancing and singing. It was so hilarious and fun to watch. Through their own individual way, these workers show that they really do care about us. The appreciation and care that I receive makes me grateful for the cafeteria workers and what they do for the students.

Oct .19 Entry #5 New Insights, New People,

My perception of life has changed since I started this volunteer program. The Food Run has shown me reality and the other sides of life. Through the Food Recycling Program, I get to experience teamwork, charity, and suffering. Working together and talking to other volunteers and cafeteria workers allows me to form a team with others and at the same time, allows me to develop friendships. Charity is seen through the donation of time of the volunteers and the food given to the soup kitchen. I am so glad that there are so many people willing to donate their time to help others.

Every Wednesday as we arrive at the soup kitchen, I always see this one man on the sidewalk with his same pair of worn-out shoes and same raggedy, plaid shirt. He is sitting there like there is no hope in life. As we are unloading the food, I always look over at him, smile, and say, "Hi sir. How are you doing today?" He always smiles and replies, "Thanks for asking ma’am. I’m trying to get along, but doing just fine." For some, it is easy to ignore the homeless, but when you see the same man or woman sitting on the side of the street week after week, you take the initiative to see how they are doing because ignoring them is impossible. The Food Recycling Program has helped me realize what life is all about and has helped me appreciate life more. Through working with the Food Run, I have developed new qualities as well as new friendships. I really enjoy the time I spend each week volunteering and helping others.
